Shhh! by Patrick Couratin5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() In addition, I have neglected educational videos and electronic games, which may be noisy but are rarely driven by sound-plots. Nor have I systematically searched the thousands of lullabies, poems, and stories in children s periodicals or in collections of folktales retold for children. Entire genres are generally absent: comic books, introductions to all five (or more) senses, music appreciation texts, phonics series. Prussing, Bill Rable and Libby Reuter, David G. ![]() Most of the titles are Anglophone picture books that I have had in my hands (or in the hands of friends and here I must thank Harold Boll, Laura Nelson, Jane and Jeremy Palin, Anne S. ![]() This bibliography is neither global nor comprehensive. Although authors of works for children often use rhyme, alliteration, and onomatopoeia, the titles listed here have plots or themes explicitly driven by sounds, by issues of loudness or quietness, by a quest for silence or for the source of an unfamiliar, hidden, or disturbing noise. 1 C h i l d r e n s B o o k s My conclusions concerning historical shifts in (attitudes toward) the noisiness of children are based upon my reading of the following children s books. ![]() Kings of chaos eva ashwood5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But it turns out revenge is a messy business, and when I end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, I royally piss off four brutal, twisted, gorgeous men.Gage, Priest, Ash, and Knox.Lucky for me, the last name on my list is someone they?ve got their own grudge against, so instead of killing me, they offer me a deal. The subject wanders off to God and the Devil, with Lamar adding, “And Earth is hell.” “Well,” Colin corrects him, “not quite hell.” An awkward silence falls. Lamar, his sons and some other adolescent boys from their Milwaukee neighborhood are sitting around, playing cards and smoking blunts, when there is a loud and confident knock on the door, which could be “a landlord’s knock, or a sheriff’s.” Mercifully it is only Colin, a young white man from their church, who has come to read them passages from the Bible, most of which Lamar knows by heart. ![]() In bed with the devil by lorraine heath5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Heâs well aware of his black reputation amongst the ton, but even he is surprised when he receives a visit from a lone âLadyâ late one evening. He doesnât believe heâs the rightful Earl, but heâs not about to step aside either. ![]() How delicious! Devout historical romance readers are aware that the peerage could get away with pretty much anything, but murder? I was quickly pulled into the book as I was hungry to learn the Devil Earlâs story. At first I wondered if this would be a combination historical, paranormal story because of the title however, the devil in said title refers to the Devil Earl, an Earl guilty of murder yet not charged with his crime. One or two more and Iâll swap genres for a bit to keep my brain fresh! Lorraine Heath turns up the heat in her latest Victorian era romance, âIn Bed with the Devilâ. Yes, Iâm still on the historical spree. ![]() Tree, Spare that Woodman by Dave Dryfoos5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() "Why did you tell Richard to stay outside, just now?" she demanded. Watching compassionately, Naomi was suddenly struck by the matter-of-fact way Ted examined the body. Annoyed-while the old man pulled a blanket over his head, turned his round face to the wall, and died. She'd been annoyed when Cappy failed to show up with the present he'd promised Richard. ![]() But they'd been laughing and singing in their own cabin only a mile away, celebrating Richard's fifth birthday. She and Ted could at least have been with him, if they'd known. And to have let Cappy die alone, in this strange world. ![]() She'd walked over with son and husband, expecting nothing more shocking than an ostentatiously stolen kiss. Her mouth had been set for a sip of his home brew, her eyes had pictured the delight he'd take in and give to her little boy. To her little boy, Cappy was a combination Grandpa and Santa Claus to herself, a sort of newly met Old Beau. She'd come to call on a friend, she reminded herself, a beloved friend-round, white-haired, rosy-cheeked lonely because he'd recently become a widower. After all his wire-pulling to get into the First Group, and his slaving to make a farm on this alien planet, dead in bed! Naomi's mind circled frantically, contrasting her happy anticipations with this shocking actuality. ![]() Oryx book5/22/2023 ![]() ![]()

He wrote, "How unworthy is my scribbling of the place." A commemorative plaque in Spanish at the Alhambra reads, "Washington Irving wrote his Tales of Alhambra in these rooms in 1829". Throughout his trip, he filled his notebooks and journals with descriptions and observations though he did not believe his writing would ever do it justice. Aided by a 35-year old guide named Mateo Ximenes, Irving was inspired by his experience to write Tales of the Alhambra. ![]() At first sight, he described it as "a most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes that I have ever seen." He immediately asked the then-governor of the historic Alhambra Palace as well as the archbishop of Granada for access to the palace, which was granted because of Irving's celebrity status. ![]() In 1828, Washington Irving traveled from Madrid, where he had been staying, to Granada, Spain.
